International co-tutorship agreements

The PhD program also promotes the signing of co-supervision agreements.

Thesis co-supervision represents a significant opportunity for doctoral students to conduct research in a manner oriented towards international cooperation. This arrangement, once the interested doctoral student's application for activation has been accepted and the required requirements have been verified, entails the student's enrollment at two universities in two different countries and the awarding of two distinct degrees with legal value recognized by both countries. The doctoral student's research project under the co-supervision arrangement is supervised by two tutors, one from each university, and the doctoral student alternates roughly equivalent periods of study at both universities.

Thesis co-supervision is governed by Article 32 of the University Doctoral Regulations and differs from the Joint Doctorate and the Doctor Europeaus.
This refers to

  • Incoming co-tutorship for doctoral students already enrolled in a doctoral program at a foreign university abroad (Home Institution) and hosted by the University of Messina (Host University);
  • Outcoming co-tutorship for doctoral students already enrolled at the University of Messina (Home University) and hosted by a foreign university (Host Institution).
